May 16,2018

On the afternoon of May 15, the seminar on “Science and Technology Journals and the Dissemination of the Research Results of Think Tanks” hosted by the R&D Organization and Management Office of CASTED was held in the Energy Saving Building of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). Wu Yishan, a grade-two research fellow from the academy, attended and spoke at the meeting. Zhang Jiuqing, Editor-in-Chief of the academy’s magazineScience and Technology China, introduced the innovative development of the magazine. Associate Editor Li Hao introduced the vision for the magazine’s operation.

Thirteen participants had an in-depth discussion on the vision, objectives, readers, source of articles, theme planning, new media communication and publication ofScience and Technology Chinain view of the theme of “spreading the research results of think tanks through science and technology journals and telling a good Chinese story about innovation”. The participants are from Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China, Science and Technology Personnel Exchange and Development Service Center of MOST, National Remote Sensing Center, China National Center for Biotechnology Development, China Science and Technology Exchange Center, High Technology Research and Development Center of MOST, Center for Science and Technology Assessment of MOST, Information Research Center of International Talent under the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, Chinese Academy of Engineering and Peking University Science and Technology Park.

During the discussion, the participants pointed out that science and technology journals provide an important platform for connecting think tank development with academic research, and a key vehicle for disseminating the research results of think tanks. As a science and technology journal,Science and Technology Chinais duty-bound to serve the country’s national strategies, particularly the innovation-driven development strategy and the strategy to build a nation strong in science and technology. It must contribute China’s wisdom, put forward Chinese proposals, and tell a good story of science and technology innovation in China. In terms of spreading the research results of think tanks, in-depth explanations in response to the hotspot issues of different periods and combined with the research results of global think tanks, followed by the presentation of the information through visualization and other means, can achieve better results.

The participants also pointed out that science and technology journals can serve as a vehicle for disseminating the research results of think tanks and become think tanks themselves. The development of science and technology journals should focus on building an influential brand, and exploring heterogeneous and differentiated development paths. The approach of “average commitment”, that is, devoting the same energy to all articles. All the articles are quite exciting, but you just cannot tell which one is the most exciting and which one can leave a deep impression on the readers. Instead, they should focus on the most popular, widely followed and challenging issues in the field of science and technology, and have clear priorities for cover stories such as artificial intelligence, Made in China 2025 and Healthy China. They must pay attention to online and offline interaction, expand from print media to online and mobile platforms of knowledge service, put in place a well-functioned intensive service system, and activate new areas of profits through new media’s own functions.

Research fellow Wu Yishan stressed at the end of the meeting that experts are an important resource for the journal’s operation. In view of the valuable time of the experts, the format of expert’s participation can be flexible, such as lectures, seminars and pen talks, to acquire high-quality contents.
